Carving of granite has always been regarded as a very complex process, which remained like this until the introduction of compressed air drills with tungsten tipped chisels.
Polishing of detailed intricate carvings was performed by rubbing the surface with stone using sand as an abrasive. When chilled iron shot started being used, shooting fiddles were also used, with emery and tin oxide added in subsequent polishing stages.
